While genetics may cause the initial chemical balance, other studies have shown that independent imbalance might have occured without DNA affecting it. As with genes, the chemical is usually found to be serotonin, an important neurotransmitter that acts between nerve cells. One of the big debates is what causes the imbalance in the first place. Is it inherited from genes which would mean there is no way of preventing it? Or is it psychological, as will be discussed in the next section? A hard fall can cause the imbalance for all we know. These chemical imbalances can be controlled, however, with a variety of drugs.
Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, and Anafranil are some of the drugs used to treat this imbalance. A person is usually on one of these drugs for at least 12 to 18 months before switching. Many doctors have complained about the uses and diagnosis' of drugs being much too frequent. This article by Simon Sobo, M.D. : http://www.geocities.com/ss06470/index.htm
talks about how we should try and avoid the use of drugs as much as possible because patients eventually depend on them too much.
